Who is IRWA' ?

IrWa project started in 2003, in the framework of the MEDA Water Programme, with the main objective of increasing farmers income by improving crop production and minimizing on-farm inputs and operation and maintenance costs in Lebanon and in Jordan. MEDA Water Programme is part of the European Union support for the improvement of water management in Middle East and North African countries (MENA) through co-operation of non-profit organizations from European Union and MENA countries.

IRWA is implemented by the following consortium:

ICU - Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (Italy);

NCARE - National Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (Jordan);

AVSI - Associazione dei Volontari per il Servizio Internazionale (Italy);

LRA - Litani River Authority (Lebanon);

CESAL: Centro de Estudios y Solidaridad con America Latina (Spain).

ICUIstituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria was created in 1966 by a group of Italian university professors with the objective of enhancing at an international level the development of a culture and science at the service of mankind. Such objective can be summarized mainly in two interdependent actions:

Spreading a culture of development cooperation seen as an integral promotion of human dignity.
Human and social development in countries at lower levels of industrialization by the means of international cooperation programs. Recognized as a non-profit organization under the Decree n. 921/67 by the President of Italian Republic in September 1967, ICU was recognized in 1972 as a non-governmental organization by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ICU is a partner of ECHO and a member of the READI - Red Euro-Árabe de ONG para el Desarrollo y la Integración - established in September 2001 with the objective of promoting dialogue, cooperation and solidarity among the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

Since its establishment ICU has operated in over 32 countries in Latin America, Africa, the Mediterranean Basin and in the Near East, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Pacific completing over 200 projects in the sectors of university cooperation, environmental engineering, education and vocational training, health and sanitation, rural development, women’s promotion, social development and emergency. ICU has been operating in the Middle East since 1994:in Lebanon it has already completed 4 projects and other 3 are being implemented, 3 projects in Jordan of which 2 completed, 1 in Syria and 1 in Egypt.

 

NCARTTNational Center for Agricultural Research and Extension began operation in July 1985 as a semiautonomous institution with administrative and financial independences.

NCARE consists of a main head located at Al-Hussein Agricultural Experiment Station at Baqa’a and six Regional Centers. NCARE operates 12 research stations to conduct and/or coordinate applied agricultural research and transfer of technology activities at the national level in collaboration with public and private agricultural institutions.

Its mandate also provides for:

The identification, testing, transfer and adoption of improved technologies.
Employ the results of agriculture research developed locally or adopted from other sources to increase agricultural production in both plant and livestock areas.
Improve and enhance agricultural production, conserve the agricultural national resources and optimize their utilization.

AVSIAssociazione Volontari per il Servizio Internazionale was founded in Italy in 1972. It is a non-governmental organization having its headquarters in Milan and Cesena. AVSI works in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Commission, several UN agencies (UNICEF, HABITAT, UNDP etc. ), and it is registered in the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council of the United Nations)and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). In addition, it is a partner in ECHO (European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office). AVSI’s main objective is to promote social, economical and cultural development projects targeting the most disadvantaged people in developing countries. Currently, AVSI is carrying-out in close cooperation with local partners, 86 projects in 35 countries of Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Actually, AVSI holds two permanent offices in the region:one in Beirut, Lebanon, where it is implementing different projects dealing with humanitarian aid, vocational training, rural development and sanitary assistance, and one in Amman, Jordan, where it is implementing a project dedicated to physical disabilities as Executing Partner for UNDP -Jordan. Care and Education of children is proceeding thanks to Distant Support Program still evolving to cover many different regions in Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

LITANI

Litani River Authority is a public establishment, with administrative and financial independence constituted in 1954. LRA’s main objective is to manage surface and underground water resources.

Among its major duties:

 

Execution of Litani River scheme for irrigation, drainage and domestic water;

Execute hydro-electrical plants and electrical networks between power source and the distribution networks in all Lebanese regions.

Preliminary studies and construction of dams.

Exploitation of hydroelectric power plants.

Irrigation, infrastructure and exploitation.
 

Gauging of all important rivers and springs in Lebanon.

 

 

CESALCentro de Estudios y Solidaridad con America Latina is a non-governmental organization founded in Spain in 1988. It is a non-profit association recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Interior.

CESAL’s main objective is to promote vital activities like education, health and rural development in different countries. Also it works on poverty alleviation through programs aiming at improving basic infrastructure for instance provision of potable water and ameliorating working performance through vocational training.

CESAL is present in more than 12 countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe working on 150 projects of development in vital sectors such as education, health, rural development and other sustainable projects dealing with poverty in urban areas.
